What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration during which a person becomes less aware of his or her surroundings. Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to treat physical or psychological conditions.

During a hypnotic state a person may be more likely to accept suggestions that can help change his or her behavior. As a hypnotherapist I lead the hypnosis and I teach people how to hypnotise themselves (self-hypnosis).

My goal is not to control a person or give the person answers but rather to help the person solve his or her own problems. I give people tools and strategies to take away and practice at home, in this way replacing old ways of thinking with new ones that are more helpful towards achieving their goals.

Hypnosis works when you are willing to listen to learn, to focus your attention and follow the suggestions of the therapist. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot be made to do something you don’t want to do. When hypnotised and your mind is in a special place, you will not follow directions against your wishes and the suggestions will always be for your benefit.

Hypnotists use many different ‘frames’ or stories that help us understand what hypnosis is. We can argue if there is or isn’t an unconscious mind and we can discuss, for hours, whether trance exists. What we do know is that hypnosis works – it works against us when the thoughts we give attention to keep us locked in an unhelpful ‘trance’, e.g. I can’t lose weight because I’m big boned or I will never get that promotion because I’m terrible in interviews. It can work for us when we tell ourselves ‘I was born lucky’ and guess what, this trance will help you be focused on your luck and fortune.

When we focus on things that make us feel good our body responds by excreting good chemicals in to our body, when we focus on negative thoughts the opposite is true.

Stop for 2 minutes and use the power of your imagination

Breathe…in through your nose…and…out through your mouth (twice as long) Repeat a few times.

Now…think back to a time when you felt excited, perhaps you were at a football match or on a roller coaster – see now what you saw then, hear now what you heard then and feel now what you felt then. Notice what is different. I bet your pulse is much faster!

Repeat now focusing on a time when you felt relaxed, perhaps you are lying on a sunbed and it is comfortably hot and you are relaxed. See now what you saw then, hear now what you heard then and feel now what you felt then. Now what is your pulse like? Much slower I’m guessing.

When we live in a perpetual state of anxiety, fearing what might happen in the future our pulse is racing. This state stimulates cortisol and adrenaline in our body which over time has a negative effect on our physical well being, panic attacks, high blood pressure etc.

This exercise demonstrates that the way we think affects how we feel and the way we feel affects how we behave.

We all have choice to focus on the things that makes us feel bad or on the things that make us feel good…and it feels good to feel good doesn’t it?

What is hypnosis used for?

Hypnosis is not intended to cure disease but rather to relieve symptoms of illness. Hypnosis has been effective in relieving pain associated with surgery, paralysis, and childbirth. Also, it is widely used to control addictions to drugs, alcohol, food, and smoking. Hypnosis can reduce stress by increasing relaxation, offering positive suggestions, and eliminating negative thoughts.

Hypnosis can help with anxiety insomnia , phobias, obesity , stopping smokingirritable bowel syndrome . Research has also found that it can reduce cancer-related pain, labor pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Private Health Cash Plans update

Private Health Cash Plans are increasing in popularity and can offer additional health cover for individuals often at minimal monthly cost. Policies can be funded by an employer or purchased by an individual, for themselves or for their family. They work by processing claims for reimbursement for healthcare costs not funded by the NHS or private medical insurance policies. Each company that offers Private Health Cash Plans have different levels of coverage, which reimburse for costs of varying therapies to set annual limits.

Below is a list of Private Health Cash Plan providers that recognise CNHC registered Hypnotherapists for reimbursement. Please note that some professional associations are also recognised but they vary by company.

  • Medicash
  • The Health Insurance Group are a broker which work to find the best cash plan for individuals or businesses. They work with Medicash (which provides reimbursement for a wide range of complementary therapies) and several other cash plan providers.
  • Pure Benefits provides health cash plans for businesses through Medicash.
  • Westfield Health recognises CNHC registration for reimbursementof Hypnotherapy on a limited number of corporate paid plans provided by specific employers.
  • Health Shield
  • Elect recognises CNHC registration for reimbursement on their business health cash plans. Elect works with Health Shield to reimburse CNHC registered Hypnotherapists.
  • Paycare recognises CNHC registration for reimbursement for Hypnotherapy on all of their health cash plans. Paycare will reimburse for 100% of claims up to a limit of £150 per year, depending on the level of coverage.

Updated GMC guidance allows GP to refer patients to practitioners on accredited register such as CNHC’s.

Feel the fear and do it anyway

Leaving school, University or for that matter even changing jobs is a major life changing moment that changes who you are.

An emotion can bubble up that might be ‘excitement’ or perhaps it could be ‘fear’.

If the latter, that ‘fear’ may be coming from the person who you are in the present moment, unsure of what the future holds and resisting change for fear of not knowing who you will become and the unknown of what that life will be like as you go through your transformation.

What if you could look beyond who you have been and where you are now in order to meet your future self; your future being an hour, a week or a month from now.

What if you could use that emotion and the experience you already have to propel you into your future with confidence?

Try this 

Picture a ladder in front of you and each rung of the ladder represents something you have achieved, a time when you or others around you have been proud of you.

As you take a step on to each rung remember that time, see now what you saw then, hear now what you heard then and FEEL now what you felt then. On a scale of 1-10 you want to be feeling as close to a 10 as you can before you can step up the next rung.

Repeat this until you have reached the top of the ladder and you are feeling good.

Then run, slide or jump down to the bottom and run, fly all the way to the top – allowing all those wonderful feelings to flow through your body.

At the top climb over the wall, in your imagination, and step into your future – taking with you all those wonderful memories and feeling so good as you step into that.

When you look back down at your present self at the bottom of the ladder, how different do you feel now?

Now notice what difference that makes.

How can NLP help me?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States in the 1970s.

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming.

The neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we communicate with ourselves and others and programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create.

NLP describes the dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behaviour (programming).

The cage door is open

The caged bird is a metaphor often used in literature representing those who have lost their freedom…the kind of freedom I want to talk about is freedom found within regardless of adversity, circumstance or environment.

Often a perceived freedom, freedom from a relationship, from a job, from conforming to conventional ways of living and the lure of greener pastures, the promise of change to our circumstances may appear to be the solution to that situation.

But what if the solution is a lot closer to home, within you and you just don’t know it yet?

On the eve of another New Year, I am reminded of Thomas Hardy’s poem The Darkling Thrush, who on 31st December 1899 amid the grey sky and bleak landscape, unphased by the inclement  weather that had ruffled his feathers, the aged bird chose to fling his soul//Upon the growing gloom and when he used his innate talent, his song, to project his happy out on to the world, that joy was felt by all.

So little cause for carolings 
      Of such ecstatic sound 
Was written on terrestrial things 
      Afar or nigh around, 
That I could think there trembled through 
      His happy good-night air 
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew 
      And I was unaware. 

We are often mistaken for believing that our environment, people, places and things are what create our experience, but it is actually the way you think about those things that creates your experience and perspective of the world. The thrush was not phased by his gloomy environment but chose instead to look within and project his beautiful song out to the world and in doing so experienced joy and offered a new sense of hope.

I have had the privilege of witnessing amazing transformations in clients this year, who through their courage to embrace their best self have been able to let go of those things that have caused them pain – and have found freedom in doing that. Now, they are living a healthier and happier reality – one of their own creation.

When we experience even the smallest shifts we form new understandings and new perspectives and that’s when we realise that the door of that cage is open – and the freedom that we discover within is the love, joy and peace that we project on to the world.

Let go of limiting beliefs – the Elephant Story

You have probably seen or heard stories about the techniques elephant trainers use to control these huge animals in captivity. I wonder how this relates to the human experience?

When an elephant is a baby and relatively weak, it is confined to an area by tying it with a rope to a tree or a stake in the ground. At first the small animal tries to get away but soon realises it is futile and stops trying.

The creature grows into an adult around 7.5 meter tall and a 6 tonne weight. However, having been conditioned from an early age to accept the way things are it doesn’t even consider as a adult, that it has the ability and the opportunity to break free.

You are only limited by the beliefs in your mind

As humans, we are conditions by the beliefs that we form from an early age. We become conditioned by our environment, through those beliefs that are passed on by our parents, teachers, religious leaders and other (often well meaning) influences. Sometimes these beliefs are helpful, sometimes they are not.

When we get a sense that something is holding us back, we often don’t know where to start in order to break free, to take that one significant step and break that rope.

Put your oxygen mask on

When I travelled to Gran Canaria last year, I remember watching the air cabin crew going through their safety checks and recalling a metaphor that is commonly used in our field, so I’m not sure who I can credit it to – but I use it a lot.

It’s the part when they say, “if you are travelling with a dependent, please put your oxygen mask on first”.

While working with clients, especially parents who are also working full-time and finding ways to cope with their 24/7, this metaphor often comes up. We start by considering what they value most/what is important to them, and we generally start the list with…”my children”, “my family” and right at the bottom of their list are things like “my health” “my fitness”.

It is then that I offer this suggestion – by putting themselves at the top, just before their number 1  – making themselves number 1 – by focusing on what fills them with love, joy and happiness and shining a spotlight of what lights up good thoughts and good emotions for them, whether that be running or laughing with their friends, anything that fills their body with dopamine and those good chemicals we make naturally – then they are improving their mind and physical fitness and putting themselves in a stronger position to ‘show up’ for their number ones.

Makes sense? 

So, my message is this, it’s OK to make you No.1, to “put your oxygen mask on first” because when you do you will be stronger in mind and in body, you will shine brighter and everyone around you will notice, will benefit and will feel your positive energy too.
