The cage door is open

The caged bird is a metaphor often used in literature representing those who have lost their freedom…the kind of freedom I want to talk about is freedom found within regardless of adversity, circumstance or environment.

Often a perceived freedom, freedom from a relationship, from a job, from conforming to conventional ways of living and the lure of greener pastures, the promise of change to our circumstances may appear to be the solution to that situation.

But what if the solution is a lot closer to home, within you and you just don’t know it yet?

On the eve of another New Year, I am reminded of Thomas Hardy’s poem The Darkling Thrush, who on 31st December 1899 amid the grey sky and bleak landscape, unphased by the inclement  weather that had ruffled his feathers, the aged bird chose to fling his soul//Upon the growing gloom and when he used his innate talent, his song, to project his happy out on to the world, that joy was felt by all.

So little cause for carolings
      Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
      Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
      His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
      And I was unaware.

We are often mistaken for believing that our environment, people, places and things are what create our experience, but it is actually the way you think about those things that creates your experience and perspective of the world. The thrush was not phased by his gloomy environment but chose instead to look within and project his beautiful song out to the world and in doing so experienced joy and offered a new sense of hope.

I have had the privilege of witnessing amazing transformations in clients this year, who through their courage to embrace their best self have been able to let go of those things that have caused them pain – and have found freedom in doing that. Now, they are living a healthier and happier reality – one of their own creation.

When we experience even the smallest shifts we form new understandings and new perspectives and that’s when we realise that the door of that cage is open – and the freedom that we discover within is the love, joy and peace that we project on to the world.

Let go of limiting beliefs – the Elephant Story

You have probably seen or heard stories about the techniques elephant trainers use to control these huge animals in captivity. I wonder how this relates to the human experience?

When an elephant is a baby and relatively weak, it is confined to an area by tying it with a rope to a tree or a stake in the ground. At first the small animal tries to get away but soon realises it is futile and stops trying.

The creature grows into an adult around 7.5 meter tall and a 6 tonne weight. However, having been conditioned from an early age to accept the way things are it doesn’t even consider as a adult, that it has the ability and the opportunity to break free.

You are only limited by the beliefs in your mind

As humans, we are conditions by the beliefs that we form from an early age. We become conditioned by our environment, through those beliefs that are passed on by our parents, teachers, religious leaders and other (often well meaning) influences. Sometimes these beliefs are helpful, sometimes they are not.

When we get a sense that something is holding us back, we often don’t know where to start in order to break free, to take that one significant step and break that rope.

Transformative coaching will help you by starting with where you are now and where you want to be and helping you to create shifts that will set you free – allowing you to be how and who YOU want to be.

Put your oxygen mask on

When I travelled to Gran Canaria last year, I remember watching the air cabin crew going through their safety checks and recalling a metaphor that is commonly used in our field, so I’m not sure who I can credit it to – but I use it a lot.

It’s the part when they say, “if you are travelling with a dependent, please put your oxygen mask on first”.

While working with clients, especially parents who are also working full-time and finding ways to cope with their 24/7, this metaphor often comes up. We start by considering what they value most/what is important to them, and we generally start the list with…”my children”, “my family” and right at the bottom of their list are things like “my health” “my fitness”.

It is then that I offer this suggestion – by putting themselves at the top, just before their number 1  – making themselves number 1 – by focusing on what fills them with love, joy and happiness and shining a spotlight of what lights up good thoughts and good emotions for them, whether that be running or laughing with their friends, anything that fills their body with dopamine and those good chemicals we make naturally – then they are improving their mind and physical fitness and putting themselves in a stronger position to ‘show up’ for their number ones.

Makes sense?

So, my message is this, it’s OK to make you No.1, to “put your oxygen mask on first” because when you do you will be stronger in mind and in body, you will shine brighter and everyone around you will notice, will benefit and will feel your positive energy too.

If you want to let go of stress, sleep naturally, get more balance in your 24/7, achieve your goals easily and more call me now – details below.

Take that time and invest in you today.

I’m waiting for your call

What is hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy and how will it help me?

Do you ever have behaviours or actions, thoughts or feelings that you wish you could change? The good news is you can, as these are things you are doing and through the help of NLP and Hypnosis you can choose to do things differently?

What is Hypnosis?

This is a topic of much debate amongst my colleagues working in the field of NLP and hypnosis – lots of time spent in meetings, at conferences and in bars sharing and challenging this subject.

What excites me about hypnosis and NLP coaching (using hypnosis) is the way that we can play with our creative imagination and our patterns of thinking in order to change our reality and therefore what we are doing (especially when it isn’t working).

The following definition is a personal favourite that aligns with my understanding:

“Hypnosis is the use of language and communication to direct attention, lead cognition and seed ideas for the purpose of leading somebody into an altered experience of reality.” James Tripp

Did you know you are a hypnotist?

We all are, because of the stories that we tell ourselves. We convince ourselves that we are this way or that all the time, based on the landscape of the reality that we create for ourselves, but it is often in fact things that we are saying and doing.

The exciting news here is that if that story isn’t working for you – you can change it by repatterning the way we are thinking (NLP) and seeding ideas in order to create a new reality (hypnosis).

It’s not magic – it is magical!

The therapy in hypnotherapy

How often have you said or heard the expression, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”?

Well, guess what, science in the 90s proved that, we can teach an old dog new tricks. That the memories that we have stored, that we present to ourselves and to the world, are only our version of our reality and we can play with all of that to help us think and behave differently. So, it is possible to change those thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are no longer working for you and move into a future towards what you do want in life.

We are all hypnotised.

Every single day human beings are bombarded with millions of messages – and there is only so much that we can take in, so we only take in so much, present it to ourselves, process that information in our mind in our own unique way and then re-present that information to the world in our communication.

Now the complication is our interpretation of that information, perspectives and how that information can get distorted – then add in emotions and we have a whole new ball game.

The irony is that it is during the process of hypnosis we truly achieve focus, shutting out negative thinking, noises and pressures from the outside world to truly absorb the suggestions intended for your good.  We plant those seeds and long after the hypnotherapy session you will allow those positive suggestions to grow as you develop a new pathway of thinking.

These pathways are like shortcuts in a park, with well-manicured pathways made of tarmac; we take a shortcut and the first time we walk across the grass we will flatten it, then the more we walk across that shortcut the more deeply embedded it will become.

But, what if that shortcut (that way of thinking) is not taking you where you want to go? Step off that shortcut and create a new path and lead yourself in the direction that will make you healthier and happier with hypnotherapy.

The more often you take the new path, the easier it will be to follow it and be how you want to be. Scientifically, this is known as “the neurons that fire together, wire together”* the more we repeat a positive thought, the more it will fuse together.

Do you hypnotise swans?

It was a Schindler’s list type moment the day ‘Hypnotherapy 4 Swans’ was born.
I was sitting in Glasgow airport, having attended another training weekend, when I was contemplating who my ‘ideal client’ was. Crowds of people were rushing past me, going about their busy lives and that’s when it struck me…

Swans! Graceful on the surface while paddling furiously below the surface.
I had often been described as swan like myself, in my old marketing and event management days, and I know this way of being well – juggling the pressures of a professional life, while also trying to manage home life. It occurred to me then how many people are being ‘swans’ in our fast – paced world.

So, I don’t hypnotise swans – but I do de-hypnotise people using a large toolkit of positive psychology and mind coaching including Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis.

I have been training, alongside my husband, for 4 years. We seek out the best in the industry to improve our skill, we read daily, watch videos and listen to podcasts. Mindfitness is a passion and watching the transformation in people is magical.

Now a Licensed Master NLP Practitioner and Hypnotherapist, I have worked with over 400 clients, I have developed a Transformational Change programme that is highly effective with clients by re-patterning their mindset and enjoying the benefits of that in an average of 3 sessions; I have written and delivered a natural weight loss programme with clients losing up to 105Ibs and transforming their relationship with food and also a Sleep programme for children where clients have reported their child who refused to sleep was now asking to be taken to bed within days.

My coaching is a partnership between me and my client. Each programme is as unique as they are and their circumstances at the time. Each session is about letting go and building on new and existing resources to create new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that will help them lead a happier, healthier and more successful professional and personal life.

Since starting my full time practice in 2017 I have been shortlisted in two awards: Healthcare Provider of the Year, Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Best Sole Trader/Micro Business, 373 Awards.
