What is hypnotherapy and how will it help me?
Do you ever have behaviours or actions, thoughts or feelings that you wish you could change? The good news is you can, as these are things you are doing and through the help of NLP and Hypnosis you can choose to do things differently?
What is Hypnosis?
This is a topic of much debate amongst my colleagues working in the field of NLP and hypnosis – lots of time spent in meetings, at conferences and in bars sharing and challenging this subject.
What excites me about hypnosis and NLP coaching (using hypnosis) is the way that we can play with our creative imagination and our patterns of thinking in order to change our reality and therefore what we are doing (especially when it isn’t working).
The following definition is a personal favourite that aligns with my understanding:
“Hypnosis is the use of language and communication to direct attention, lead cognition and seed ideas for the purpose of leading somebody into an altered experience of reality.” James Tripp
Did you know you are a hypnotist?
We all are, because of the stories that we tell ourselves. We convince ourselves that we are this way or that all the time, based on the landscape of the reality that we create for ourselves, but it is often in fact things that we are saying and doing.
The exciting news here is that if that story isn’t working for you – you can change it by repatterning the way we are thinking (NLP) and seeding ideas in order to create a new reality (hypnosis).
It’s not magic – it is magical!
The therapy in hypnotherapy
How often have you said or heard the expression, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”?
Well, guess what, science in the 90s proved that, we can teach an old dog new tricks. That the memories that we have stored, that we present to ourselves and to the world, are only our version of our reality and we can play with all of that to help us think and behave differently. So, it is possible to change those thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are no longer working for you and move into a future towards what you do want in life.
We are all hypnotised.
Every single day human beings are bombarded with millions of messages – and there is only so much that we can take in, so we only take in so much, present it to ourselves, process that information in our mind in our own unique way and then re-present that information to the world in our communication.
Now the complication is our interpretation of that information, perspectives and how that information can get distorted – then add in emotions and we have a whole new ball game.
The irony is that it is during the process of hypnosis we truly achieve focus, shutting out negative thinking, noises and pressures from the outside world to truly absorb the suggestions intended for your good. We plant those seeds and long after the hypnotherapy session you will allow those positive suggestions to grow as you develop a new pathway of thinking.
These pathways are like shortcuts in a park, with well-manicured pathways made of tarmac; we take a shortcut and the first time we walk across the grass we will flatten it, then the more we walk across that shortcut the more deeply embedded it will become.
But, what if that shortcut (that way of thinking) is not taking you where you want to go? Step off that shortcut and create a new path and lead yourself in the direction that will make you healthier and happier with hypnotherapy.
The more often you take the new path, the easier it will be to follow it and be how you want to be. Scientifically, this is known as “the neurons that fire together, wire together”* the more we repeat a positive thought, the more it will fuse together.
